On a recent trip to Japan we caught up with some Australian expats to understand why, beyond the incredible food, fashion and typically lovely locals, they've chosen to call Tokyo home.

Where are you from? Sydney

What brings you to Tokyo? I visited in 2002 and saw how much locals love the Beastie Boys. That stayed with me for a long time and I felt we had some common ground.

What do you spend your time doing here? I’m developing my own artwork. The five years before I left were spent managing a gallery and producing other people’s exhibitions. It was time to apply that experience to my own practice.

Best thing about living in Tokyo? Trying really hard to not say ‘street beers’… but we’re heading into Summer, and every park just has a great social atmosphere this time of year.

Where would you take us to on a day or night out in Tokyo? Usually tourists take me places! If you come over my way (out of the city), I guess we are riding bikes by the river, digging through flea markets, and making plenty of convenience store refreshment stops.

What’s the strangest thing as a visitor to this country? I’m nearly seven years deep here, the strangest thing is how normal it feels. It’s definitely still weird, but it’s nice to operate as an artist in that headspace. Accepting that some things are going to be a hassle, and others are going to be ridiculously pleasant.

What is something you’re looking forward to? I have an exhibition in August at China Heights in Sydney. It will be nice to be back with the home team for a bit.
