Mary J. Blige has reunited with Netflix following her Oscar nominated turn in the platform’s feature film Mudbound. As Variety have it, she’s set to become a series regular in upcoming superhero mystery The Umbrella Academy, adapted from Gerard Way’s graphic novels of the same name. Mirroring the My Chemical Romance frontman’s award-winning comic series, The Umbrella Academy will follow the estranged members of a dysfunctional superhero family as they attempt to solve the mystery of their father’s death.
Mary will play Cha-Cha, “a ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman” with a penchant for pain—that’s bound to keep things interesting. She’s joined by Ellen Page, another member of the superhero squad, with Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castaneda, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher rounding out the family. If all goes well at the Academy Awards, Mary will have a best supporting actress win to her name by the time The Umbrella Academy hits Netflix.
