melodrama forever: lorde’s sophomore album shoots to number one

Big congratulations to the bright, brilliant New Zealander.

Last week, Lorde’s brand new LP Melodrama soared up the Billboard 200 chart to the top spot, making it the kiwi singer’s first-ever number one record — despite the global success of her breakthrough debut Pure Heroine.

Lorde’s is the third album in as many weeks to land a female artist in the number one slot, with Katy Perry’s Witness topping last week’s charts, and Halsey’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom holding the fort the week prior. It’s been five years since the Billboard 200 hosted three female artists as consecutive number ones (throwback to the memorable 2012 run of Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and Swift), and we can’t help but feel excited by the female voices across our airwaves.

Pop’s reigning heroine took to Twitter yesterday to thank fans, graciously championing “telling secrets and uncovering truths,” and adding her 15-year-old self would have been “so fucking proud.” And so she should be, because Melodrama‘s success wasn’t about her former wunderkid status; it was a truthful account of young women’s experiences.

As for tour plans? Lorde will take Melodrama around the world from August to April, kicking off in England before arriving in Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the US.
