Earlier this month, Jeremy Scott announced that he and ride-or-die Miley Cyrus were cooking up some looks for her gig hosting MTV’s Video Music Awards ceremony on Sunday. While there’s still no word on whether or not our predictions for topless and/or “Wrecking Ball”-inspired outfits bear any truth, today, the network unveiled its first taste of Scott’s VMA vision: a redesigned Moonman statue.
The Moschino creative director’s Moonman rocks a new rainbow look inspired by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers’ iconic TV test pattern bars. Interestingly, his sophomore collection with adidas Originals in fall/winter 09 featured puffa parkas and sweaters in the same style. But according to Variety, the motivation for the bars actually stem from the network’s analog origins; MTV decided to use the motif “to reference the past way of watching TV as we continue to move into an age of digital consumption.”
Scott’s statue is also kitted out in a pair of his iconic wing sneakers and some peace sign ice, which, according to the paper, is “meant to ask fans to foster an idea of unity and understanding.” Fittingly so, as Miley continues to invest her energies in her Happy Hippie Foundation, which benefits homeless, LGBT, and at-risk youth.
Given MTV’s 34-year history, you might imagine that Scott’s efforts are part of a long legacy of artistic reinterpretations. This actually isn’t the case. The original astronaut (which dates back to MTV’s very first broadcast) was used from the first awards ceremony in 84, up until 2013, when contemporary artist KAWS remixed the statue in his signature style.
The VMAs will air on August 30.
