In 2005, when everyone was obsessed with denim skirts paired with Ugg boots and The Simple Life, a TV show came out that changed the lives of the rich, young, famous — and the commoners who wanted to watch them. For three years, My Super Sweet 16, with its unforgettable Hilary Duff theme song, showcased the fabulous parties of rich tweens around the US. The infamous birthday tantrums, extravagant gowns and tuxes, and constant fighting with parents over money, cars, and sometimes horses, made the show an icon of the early aughts.
Earlier this year, MTV announced that it is reviving My Super Sweet 16. And this week the network revealed it will be casting the show with the help of the social media app Music.ly. Musical.ly users can submit their entry videos on the app using the hashtag #MySuperSweetAudition for the chance to be featured. The first season of My Super Sweet 16 premiered in 2005, which means that anyone hoping to be in the new season was only four or five years old when it aired.
This isn’t the first time that MTV has used the mobile app to audition and cast a show. The network is a longtime partner of Music.ly, and used the app for a campaign for the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, for which over 900,000 videos were created and shared.
MTV president Chris McCarthy said in a statement that “the casting for My Super Sweet 16 is just the beginning of engaging the audience more deeply into current and future MTV programming.”
It is not clear yet if MTV plans to cast the entire season this way. A press release on Monday advised fans to stay tuned to MTV’s website and Instagram, where the network will be posting some favorite clips from the show and submissions as they come in.
