The clocks have gone back, the temperature has dropped, and the fake blood has been stashed away for another year. With Halloween over, winter is well and truly here and with it comes some great TV and plenty of excuses to hide away from the chill and watch TV in bed until Netflix pops up with the passive aggressive “you still watching hun?” message.
Here are the 9 best new Netflix releases for November and December to prepare you for hibernation until 2019.
1. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
(Nov 16th)
The Coen brothers come to Netflix with this anthology of six short films, all taking place in the 19th century post-Civil War Old West. Starring James Franco, Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson, Tom Waits and Brendan Gleeson, each of the six chapters provide a different story from the frontier. Whether that’s a story about a wannabe bank robber, a prospector mining for gold, a singer-turned-assassin or a classic gothic tale about two weary travelling performers, it’s a wild ride (pun intended).
2. The Other Side of the Wind
(Nov 2nd)
A film within a film from the late director (and writer, producer and editor) Orson Welles, The Other Side of the Wind is a satire on Classic Hollywood and avant-garde filmmaking. A mockumentary, it was created in the 70s but only now is getting released. The plot focuses on Jack Hannaford, an aging director, and the last day of his life, when he muses on incomplete projects and what his legacy will be.
3. They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead (Nov 2nd)
If you liked The Other Side of the Wind then you’ll love this sister project. Created by Morgan Neville, it tells the story of The Other Side of the Wind, Orson Welles’s last (unfinished) project. This cerebral documentary speaks to the actors, crew members and others who were there to witness the film being made, as well as examining the last 15 years of Orson’s life as he prepared to gamble on this radical comeback. Yes, the title may sound morbid, but it’s actually very touching, we promise.
4. ROMA
(Dec 14th)
Already receiving awards season hype, this film from Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón is breaking with Netflix tradition by receiving a theatrical release as well as a premiere on the streaming service. The elegiac black and white film tells the story of a tumultuous year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico, set in the early 70s.
5. Super Drags
(Nov 9th)
RuPaul’s Drag Race has finally made the leap to animation with this future classic, which is sure to give My Little Pony a run for its money. Starring Drag Race alums Ginger Minj, Trixie Mattel, Shangela and Willam Belli, the show tells the story of three gay co-workers who moonlight as superhero drag queens fighting against the evil Queen Elza and conservative politico Sandoval. Think Powerpuff Girls meets Kick Ass meets To Wong Foo.
6. She-Ra and the Princess of Power
(Nov 16th)
You might remember 80s classic cartoon He Man (or your parents might have told you it existed, and they mention it in Ted a lot), but it’s safe to say that most of us are less familiar with She-Ra. And that’s unfair. Dedicated to righting that wrong, this Netflix update is all about She-Ra (AKA Adora) as she joins the rebellion and the fight between good and evil.
7. Sunderland Til I Die
(Dec 14th)
You can’t say Netflix don’t cover all bases. This touching documentary follows hardcore Sunderland fans during the 2017-2018 season as they tackle community, old-school fandom and cope with the club’s relegation from the Premier League. Look, watching this from the comfort of your own home is far warmer, less stressful and – if you went during this particular 17-18 season – less depressing, than going to an actual Sunderland match.
8. Bird Box
(Dec 21st)
Already being branded the new A Quiet Place, Bird Box is a post-apocalyptic tale of survival, starring a blindfolded Sandra Bullock. It tells the story of a woman and her two children who are searching for sanctuary after a wave of mass suicides have decimated most of the world’s population. 9. A Christmas Prince: The Other Royal Wedding
