new york’s favorite political cabaret, the citizens band, is back!

The 30-plus person troupe that’s shared the stage with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Zooey Deschanel, Cyndi Lauper, and Zoe Kravitz is gearing back up for the 2016 election cycle.

It’s been ten years (and two Presidents) since activist, performer, and writer Sarah Sophie Flicker teamed with singer Jorjee Douglass, model and singer Karen Elson, aerialist Chelsea Bacon and director Adam Dugas to found the Citizen’s Band. But as the 2016 candidates take their places at the starting line, the political cabaret will dust off those trapeze tricks and return to the stage tonight at Irving Plaza.

First spurred into creative action back in 2004, The Citizens Band made a serious splash in New York’s nightlife scene by tackling political corruption through song, dance, acrobatics, and dazzling visual splendor. Past performances include the Bush-era Je T’Aime, Scumbag as well as the Trepanning Opera, a satire of the American health care system.

Over the years, the likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Zooey Deschanel, Cyndi Lauper, and Zoe Kravitz have all shared the stage with the band. Especially given Hillary Clinton’s recent announcement confirming her bid for the Oval Office, we’re stoked to see what songs, stunts, and surprises the Band and special guests Meredith Graves of Perfect Pussy and Orange is the New Black‘s Lea DeLaria have in store for its first performance of Political Theater, a show that promises to “inspire political engagement and getting our souls to the polls.”
