Everybody likes to spend their summer vacation down beside the side of the silvery sea, and Margaret Howell is no exception. For her spring/summer 17 show, the Tadworth-born designer continued her stroll along the prom, prom, prom with a gleeful collection of untucked shirts, lace-up sandals, and shorts reminiscent of old fashioned swimming trunks.
It’s a theme we picked up on in her men’s show back in June of, course, and continued this time, too, with a fair share of blazers, cardigans, and raincoats (this being British Summertime). In fact, the catwalk show couldn’t have been indebted to the boating striped nostalgia of the seaside’s past, unless Martin Parr had turned up with a knotted handkerchief on his head and proceeded to take the backstage images from the comfort of a deckchair.
As ever with Margaret Howell, it’s all infinitely relaxed and understated, wearable to a greased tea and easy like the Sunday morning show time. Save your money ’til summer comes round and let Howell take you to a place where the cockle shells are found. These are clothes to trudge slowly over wet sand in.
