Lana Del Rey’s work is always soaked in sexuality, romance and nostalgia, though this new track harks back to 2005 more-so than 1955. In the previously unreleased BBM Baby, Lana sings “I be BBM’in you, telling you all the things I’m gonna do to you when you get home baby.” Of course, the BMM is her Blackberry Messenger. Sounds like she was onto digital love letters earlier than most of us.
The tack has been circulating Tumblr all week — the home of Lana’s most ardent supporters. Hardcore fans have known about the existence of the song for a while (but hadn’t heard it) ’cause Producer Penguin Prison mentioned it in a 2011 interview with FILTER. “We worked on a song a while ago,” he explained, “It was called BBM Baby, I guess it was about her BlackBerry Messenger.”
“I met her like two years ago and hung out with her a bunch in London and New York. She’s funny, she’s a very entertaining person to hang out with, and she has a wonderful singing voice,” the producer concluded.
