Jacob Elordi is on a strong casting run at the moment. With Euphoria season three still in development, the actor has lined up a handful of movie roles that have piqued the industry’s interest. First up is Saltburn, the dangerous campus movie he co-stars in with Barry Keoghan; then, we’ll get his take on Elvis in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, a biopic of the singer’s former wife. Now we know what will follow it: the queer period drama On Swift Horses, based on the 2019 novel by Shannon Pufahl.

What’s the plot of On Swift Horses?
The book on which the film is based is set in 1950s America, and follows two gamblers with family ties on their individual journeys towards love and new lives.
Muriel is a woman who, having recently lost her parents and got married in quick succession, is working in a dead end diner in San Diego. She spends her days eavesdropping on the jockeys and trainers who frequent the nearby Del Mar racetrack, using that knowledge to bet successfully on the horse races. But she’s struggling to make sense of why she can’t tell her husband, Lee, of her wins. Instead, she confides in Lee’s brother Julius, a down-and-out war veteran who, having been a distant figure in her life, starts to move closer to her inner circle.
Julius meanwhile has lived a life in Las Vegas, doing his own form of betting. His penchant for blackjack leads him to a job patrolling the boards in a casino, where he meets a blackjack artist named Henry. Together, they start a complex love affair.

Alongside Jacob, who is in the cast of On Swift Horses?
Although the particular roles for each cast member haven’t been formally announced, based on some evidence, we can guess who is playing who. Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones is apparently playing Muriel, while her husband, Lee, will be played by British actor Will Poulter.
It’s thought Jacob will be playing the part of Julius, while Henry will be played by Diego Calva, most recently seen in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon. On the red carpet at the SAG Awards in February 2023, Variety spoke to Diego, who stated he had some “pretty hot scenes” with Jacob, alluding to the idea that they’ll be playing the two lovers.

The film has only just started shooting, so it’s a bit early to hazard a guess at the film’s exact release date, but we imagine the movie will drop sometime in late 2024.
