At the beginning of the year, details were announced for Terrence Malick’s new film Song to Song. Set in the Austin music scene, it would star Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman as two couples navigating love, relationships, and creativity. Alongside the impressive cast, the project would also feature several music legends, including Patti Smith,Iggy Pop, Lykke Li, The Black Lips, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Florence and the Machine. Now, following the film’s premier at SXSW over the weekend, we’ve been given a look at what this mix of artists and actors might look like, with a clip of Patti Smith and Rooney Mara.
Patti is offering life advice to Rooney’s character, an indie musician. She talks about marriage, losing her husband in 1994, and her lingering grief before reflecting on her own previous expectations about death, saying, “I never thought I would live long. You know, I’d be an artist and die young of tuberculosis or something, like Charlotte Brontë.” As well as acting in Song to Song, the Horses musician will also contribute an original track called “God Running.”
Song to Song is out March 17
