Margiela's first collection with Matthieu Blazy outed as the designer of the anonymity loving label signalled a friendlier approach to the brand's strictest principles.

“Let’s come together, in sweet harmony,” was The Beloved’s musical message on the Maison Martin Margiela soundtrack Friday evening, and for a house that’s been through something of a tumultuous couple of months, it was a nice sentiment. Rumour has it that Matthieu Blazy, the anonymity-loving label’s designer, who was outed by Suzy Menkes after the Margiela haute couture show in June, is already on to pastures new, leaving things to once again go back to their usual faceless normal at the Maison. Maybe it was that sense of fellowship that inspired this collection’s villager vibe and positive outlook.

It was there in countless sweet florals – some painted onto the garments in white, MMM style – and dainty brocades used in maxi patchwork. It was a community collection; a kind of commie uniform for a small society, like those prairie polygamists in Utah if they had better hair and Kanye West at their show. Perhaps most insinuating of all, the Maison’s trademark incognito sunglasses had been covered in floral print, signalling a friendly approach to the brand’s strict principles of anonymity. They really just want to be left alone. Oh yeah, in sweet harmony.
