On September 24, Alexandra Palace will be taken over by thousands of people spreading good vibes only. Some of the best musicians alive will take to various stages at the London incarnation of the iconic Brooklyn festival. With a deep-rooted ethos of respect, breaking down stereotypes, and celebrating individuality — all cultures, all races, all genders — AFROPUNK is a safe space, a no-hate zone filled with creative people loving one another and expressing themselves.
This is why, with shared values and a whole lot of admiration, we are pleased to announce that i-D is partnering with AFROPUNK as its organizers bring the party to town. The headliner comes in the truly magnificent form of onetime i-D cover star, the legendary Grace Jones; SZA, Cakes Da Killa, Don Letts, Goldlink and Lady Leshurr will also perform — and that’s just for starters.
Over on i-D’s South Stage, we’ll be presenting Ho99o9, London’s own GAIKA, Big Joanie, Skinny Girl Diet, Youth Man, Nova Twins, Vodun, and The Connectors. “There’s one act that really excites me because of his potential. It’s a lot to do with what I’m hearing, what I grew up with, and what’s ingrained in me: and that’s Gaika.” Matthew Morgan, co-founder of AFROPUNK told i-D last week. “He’s doing something that’s very familiar and has reference points, but at the same time is very different. I see where he could potentially go and it’s important that that influence of reggae is in UK culture in the same way that afrobeats is now a prominent feature of UK culture. It’s really, really important to me and I love what he’s doing. Plus, he’s from the East End, and I’m from the East End!”
AFROPUNK takes place on September 24 at Alexandra Palace. Tickets available here.
