Artist, musician and sound designer Max Cooper is carving his own niche within the music industry. Operating within the realms of dancefloor experimentation and intricate, emotive sound design, the UK based artist has lent his hand to remixes for Houndstooth’s post-rock textural artist Guy Andrews. Guy’s Our Space LP, originally released in March this year, now comes with huge VIP edits of Higher Waters and Without Names as well a monster techno remix from Ben Pearce and this impeccable version from Max Cooper himself, which i-D are very pleased to share. As the captivating collage of textures dance around the soundscape in which Max Cooper has become so known for beautifully creating, we hear some words on rework form the man himself.
“I was immediately taken with Guy’s music when I first heard it, with his combination of live instrumentation, analogue distortion and digital production. The track I had the opportunity to remix has a great guitar riff which I decided to build around as the main motif. I went for a many layers approach, and tried to complement the simplicity of the main melody with some percussive complexity using edits of a semi-random sample editing process.
Guy had a mad compression artefact track which I brought in for the breakdown so that things could descend into complete chaos for a moment, and as the track progressed I tried to work further towards his original, bringing in more of Guy’s percussive elements and pads to eventually close with only original-track elements. It was a fun project, always a pleasure working with such a great piece of music!”
