Kojey Radical is shaping up to be one of 2016’s most powerful new artists thanks to his potent social commentary and enigmatic creative that challenges any norms you might care to mention. Following the success of the extraordinary Open Hand, Kojey drops the much-anticipated follow-up, Blind Eye, premiering exclusively here on i-D. Focusing on the issues in the Middle East, Kojey sends a universal message, delivered over bone-rattling beats and evocative instrumentation.
‘Had enough of being silenced, if I don’t speak, take my voice and teach the masses acts of kindness/ Pictures of our nations painted in colour of violence…’
“The artists I love and respect are the ones that painted a picture of the times they live in,” Kojey tells i-D. “I think it’s easy to sometimes forget the power and effect of music. The injustices suffered in the world can often make you feel helpless and I’ve always felt I could do more with my artistry. I’m thankful I grew up in such a melting pot of culture because it allowed me to listen and learn and appreciate different perspectives. I wanted to put a sense of compassion in my art and give something for all generations to listen and appreciate. Frank Gamble and I simply invite you all to love, overall.”
Blind Eye is taken from Kojey’s new EP, 23 Winters, due for release in February. Kojey plays Oslo on 28 Jan
