2014 has been a strong year for Adidas collaborations. We’ve seen the German sportswear icon work with a range of designers, from Mary Katrantzou and Pharrell Williams to rural clothier Barbour and London skaters Palace.
This year’s fall collection sees BAPE boss and Williams compadre Nigo put a distinct spin on a number of Originals staples, whether it’s applying cartoon graphics to tracksuits, a jagged take on the stripes logo and his own name in the classic typeface. The collection bears more than a little resemblance to Adidas’ recent efforts with Palace – see the 80s-immersed crewneck jumpers – so we expect further releases to show this overt street influence.
For the new collection’s lookbook, Nigo called on snapper Ari Marcopoulos – who shaped Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail aesthetic – to meet and capture an equally exciting yet much younger hip-hop act: Ratking.
Showing the New York trio hot in practice in their Bushwick hangout and in other more reflective moments, the shots see the group look fit to fill the Stan Smiths of luminaries such as Run-DMC and Beastie Boys; listening to their April-released debut album So It Goes confirms this.
adidas Originals by NIGO is released next week.
