OATH Studio is the emerging label from the next star of the South African fashion scene, Soweto raised designer Rich Mnisi. For the brand’s spring/summer 16 lookbook, Mnisi collaborated with fellow South African talents, photographer Kristin-Lee Moolman and stylist Gabrielle Kannemeyer, to capture the spirit of androgynous 80s and 90s township culture. Moolman, known for her raw portraiture of global youth, shot a series of young South Africans in and around Mnisi’s grandmother’s house in Chiawelo, Soweto casting several of the models on the day of the shoot.
The result is a beautiful series of portraits that shine a light on the height of androgyny in the region, fueled by the township ethos of ‘showing up’ i.e, outdoing each other. The creative trio’s heritage, personal connection and knowledge of the culture celebrated in the lookbook creates an authenticity and beauty deserving of a gallery show.
