Pharrell is teaming up with Tracy Oliver, the screenwriter behind this year’s historic blockbuster Girls Trip, on a new horror film. The duo are adapting the young adult novel Survive the Night into a feature-length thriller, following a crew of best friends through a warehouse rave on Halloween as they’re hunted by an mysterious assailant. So, not exactly a perfect night out.
Oliver’s Girls Trip was the first black-led film to net $100 million at the box office, and the only comedy to make $100 million this year. The film’s cast, its director, and producers are all black.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Oliver and Pharrell see Survive the Night as an “empowering” story about female friendship. Music (we imagine EDM) will reportedly be “a large component to the story.” Pharrell will produce, with Oliver writing and directing.
The pair have worked together in the past, both serving as producers for the Issa Rae web series Awkward Black Girl. By the sounds of things, Survive the Night will be a whole lot of freaky fun, and the soundtrack’s got to be killer.
