When Rihanna arrived at the 2015 Met Gala, it was instantly clear her look would go down as one of the event’s best, ever. The golden robe and headpiece she donned were by Chinese couture designer Guo Pei, whose garments twice feature in the Costume Institute’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition. One gown, entitled Magnificent Gold, occupies an entire room in the Met. Deservedly so – it took 50,000 hours to construct. Pei is known as a talented couture designer but she’ll soon be branching out into the Ready-to-Wear market. “Too many people around me say they love my dresses but cannot afford them. That makes me sad because I am not a designer for the minority” she’s explained to The Straits Times. How’d these two inspirational women come together? Google. Rihanna told Vanity Fair: “I was researching Chinese couture on the Internet and I found [this dress]”
