Who run the world? It’s starting to look more and more like Rihanna. The singer, actor, designer, philanthropist, activist, and Bajan beauty has done more for the world in just one year that most people do in their entire lives. And now she’s reaping the benefits. First she took Harvard, when she accepted the Humanitarian of the Year award back in February, and now she’s set to be honored by Parsons School of Design, at its 69th annual Parsons gala in May. With past winners including DKNY’s Donna Karan and the inimitable SJP, the award recognizes individuals dedicated to empowering young women across the globe through their respective fields.
“Parsons is proud to present Rihanna with this honor, as she has inspired millions through her powerful music and distinct style,” Joel Towers, executive dean of Parsons School of Design, explained in a statement. “She has championed our recent alumni on a number of occasions by wearing their designs. She is also creating important philanthropic programs, which support communities by fostering effective education, health, and emergency response programs around the world through her Clara Lionel Foundation.”
Set up in tribute to her grandparents, Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation is a charity that fights against injustice, inequality, and poverty, and aims to provide access to education and health for young people worldwide, particularly girls in developing countries. “I consistently find creative and exciting designs coming from Parsons alumni, so I feel a deep connection to the school,” Rihanna says. “But, I am especially grateful that Parsons would recognize me for the work I’ve done in regards to philanthropy.” Yas Kween.
