Designers seem to be enjoying tongue-in-cheek lifestyle experiments at the moment, from Balenciaga’s bike to Supreme’s bricks and Vetements’ weed grinder. Now Saint Laurent are trying their luck in the dubiously practical accessories market, with this rollerskate-stiletto hybrid. “But I can’t even walk in heels,” I hear you whisper? Minor detail.
The label had been offering flat roller skates for years under Hedi Slimane, but it was Anthony Vaccarello who decided to kick the concept into overdrive. We got our first glimpse of the shoe in February in the Icon Preview campaign; in which Brazilian beauty Fernanda Oliveira managed to wear them with poise — though not standing up, mind you.
Now the heeled skates have landed exclusively in the label’s Parisian Rue de Grenelle boutique, where they could be yours for $2,515 AUD. While the death-defying skates are almost certain to be a practical nightmare in real life, they could be a fashion film dream come true, right at home in an aesthetic alternate universe imagined by Petra Collins or Philippa Price.
