Willow Smith has dropped a brand new, grunge-influenced track, “TnGwee #7,” in collaboration with friend Tyler Cole. The latest of a string of eclectic songs posted to her Soundcloud, “TnGwee #7” has a more rock and roll vibe than previous offerings, presenting a wall of distorted guitars, echoey vocals and a xylophone loop.
Opening with the line, “How could you leave me in a place where I’m a refugee?,” the song continues Smith’s focus on social and political issues. But it’s less optimistic than previous songs, and is littered with the hopeless refrain, “You’re all alone, you’re all alone.” It recalls real “Smells Like Teen Spirit” vibes at the 40 second mark.
The song has an atmospheric vibe; the distorted guitars and vocals sound like the cheap speakers in your emo teen bedroom that can’t quite handle the volume you’re blasting.
