Slowthai is made of cake in his new music video

He’s also pregnant and James Blake is his unborn child, so that’s fun.

Nobody could ever accuse Slowthai of making a boring music video. In the past couple of years, he’s plunged into a toilet in homage to Trainspotting (“Doorman”); pulled Excalibur from its stone (“Nothing Great About Britain”); been waterboarded (“Inglorious”); and performed while stood in some kind of death circle (“BB (BODYBAG)”). Phew. For his new single “feel away” — the start of a new chapter and a warm up to another almost definitely brilliant album — the artist called on director Oscar Hudson to mess with your mind.

The track, which features James Blake and Mount Kimbie, is about “the doubts we have, whether it be within friendships, your partner or with our family,” Ty says. “It’s about putting yourself in the other person’s shoes so you have a better understanding of the situation.” Here, he literally puts himself in his partner’s shoes, taking on the physical labour of their pregnancy and finding himself struggling through it.

The whole thing is totally surreal, with their fetus singing along to James Blake’s feature, his partner running off with the doctor and the two of them getting married right there and then in his hospital room before slicing Ty up as part of the ceremony because — get this — he’s made of cake. As is the baby, it transpires. You can’t trust anything these days.
