Kenzo continue to remind the world that no one quite gets surrealist fashion fancy like them. For their latest film My Mutant Brain, a story for perfume KENZO World, they’ve teamed up with everyone-under-40’s favourite director, Spike Jonze. The offering follows a young socialite as she very literally shakes off a stuffy evening.
Played by The Leftovers actress Margaret Qualley, who really can move, our bored heroine slips out of a muted formal evening to create magical havoc in the lobby. She kicks, she jumps, she dances, she defies gravity, she shoots lasers out of her fingers – all in a formal dress and heels. It’s deeply impressive, not that you’d expect anything less for the first fragrance created by Carol Lim and Humberto Leon.
This departure from the usual perfume tropes – hello beautiful woman running down a hallway – was choreographed by Ryan Heffington, the mind and limbs behind Sia’s Chandelier video. And Margaret’s spasmodic performance was set to a track by Spike’s brother Sam Spiegel and musician Ape Drums. We guarantee you’ll never be able to stand still in a mirrored lobby every again.
