Continuing the acid bright theme of her 2017 Fear the Future tour announcement, St. Vincent’s new video for New York presents a similarly surreal world of bright block colours and bizarre happenings. In the visuals for the cryptic love song, which we got pretty deep into a lesbian forum trying to decypher, Annie Clark hangs out in a colourful range of sets, from a flower shop to a purple living room with a sawn-in-half sofa, and inside a painted mouth surrounded by stylish gymnasts and a burning bunch of leafy greens. There’s a shaking bum, and a massive black rotating cube, and a supermarket stocked with unbranded goods.
While there’s no note from Annie about the meaning of the video, director Alex Da Corte says in a statement: “I think Annie’s New York is the New York of my dreams — one that is blurry and fractured, dreamy and flat. It is the Toontown to my Hollywood. It is beautiful but slightly out of reach”. Check it out, below.
