What a two weeks it’s been. These past 14 days are almost worth dividing into BH (Before Hello) and AH (After Hello). As with Drake’s Hotline Bling, Adele proves (possibly unintentionally) that if you can create something meme worthy, the internet will not disappoint. Here are our highlights of the online reactions to Adele’s return with Hello….
1. Britney tweeting @Adele and @i-D
The i-D cover received pretty incredible coverage: from Rylan on This Morning (true story) to articles on Time and Vogue. But our favorite had to be this invite from Ms. Spears to Ms. Adkins. Though Britney didn’t appear to invite us per se, deep down, we’re confident she meant to include us. What a weekend we’ll have! Adele, i-D and Britney in Vegas. What happens in…
2. This women messing with her ex…
There’s probably only one person on Planet Earth who hasn’t heard Hello 18,000 times already, and this happens to be, unfortunately for him, the ex of Mary Calderella. The student put her former boyfriend on blast brilliantly by texting lyrics from Hello before screengrabbing and tweeting. The convo quickly went viral. ‘I feel like you’ll really regret saying this when you’re sober’.
3. Ellen getting in on the act
DeGeneres loves nothing more than tapping into the current zeitgeist with a gag-laden video. Playing her hand perfectly, the chat show host gets extra points for out-old-skool-ing the flip phone Xavier Dolan had Adele use in the video. Our other favorite bits include putting Drake on call waiting and meet/ eating beets.
4. These memes and tweets. All of them.
5. The inevitable Lionel Richie mash-up
As soon as Adele played i-D the lead single from her new album (sorry to show off), the words ‘Lionel’ Richie’ and ‘viral content’ jumped to mind. Thank you, the internet. Not to be ungrateful to the person who made this, but does anyone else think this was just a tad bit rushed? Though, if it’s good enough for Lionel, it’s good enough for us.
6. Hello gets Kidulthood’d
Adam Deacon and Aml Ameen get in on the act as the Noel Clarke classic gets an internet reworking.
7. All the famouses getting in on it
From Katy Perry to Kate Hudson, well done famous people for having a sense of humor. Or hiring people to have it for you. Whatever.
8. Rick Ross remixing Hello
Adele gets a Maybach Music makeover from The Bawse. What strikes us about this — as opposed to Ross’s remix of Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud — is that Ricky appears to have actually listened to the lyrics of this one. Which is good. The Miami MC recently stated he’d like to work with Adele. Join the line dude, join the line.
9. Joe Jonas’ band DNCE covering Hello
This isn’t brilliant, it’s just weird. Really, really weird. Firstly, why are Joe and his pals dressed as clowns? Everyone knows clowns are terrifying. Also, if you can’t top a vocal by the original, maybe it’s better not to try, eh?
