Last May Sony announced its plans to remake 1996 cult film The Craft. Starring Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Rachel True in every one of your dark teen fantasies, the film celebrated it’s 20th anniversary this week. The initial news brought the usual concern over a classic favorite being reimagined and possibly wrecked. But this week, original producer Douglas Wick has set things straight saying it won’t be a remake — rather, a sequel.
Details are still fuzzy, but word is the film will pick up 20 years after the events of the 90s film. So far none of the original cast have been confirmed, leading to suggestions that the central story will revolve around a new set of young witches.
Speaking to HitFlix Douglas did tease, “There will be callbacks to the original movie, so you will see there is a connection between what happened in the days of The Craft, and how these young women come across this magic many years later.”
Rachel True, who played Rochelle — the witch who used her powers to make a bully’s hair fall out-also spoke to the site, but seemed less enthusiastic. “I’m kind of over remakes in general, but I also want to be supportive,” she said. “If they think it’s a good idea, Sony, to remake it, then they should, and it’ll probably be awesome. But I just feel like, why not do another witch movie?”
Although she did add, “I’d love to see what the girls are up to now that they’re women,” and mused that she thinks Rochelle would now be “running a makeup-y, perfume company.” If they are looking for a fresh coven, she suggested that her casting pick would be Zoe Kravitz. We’d be sad to not see if Sarah and Nancy ever worked things out, but the presence of Zoe would be a pretty awesome compromise.
Honestly, they can do whatever they want as long as there is a makeover scene.
