Jeez, Kevin Smith really loves convinces stores: thanks to Clerks he owes his whole career to the halogen lit heavens. Yoga Hosersis the latest addition to his convenience catalog. The new comedy-horror film is also the second installment in his True North trilogy, the sequel to 2014’s Tusk.
It’s a real father-daughter affair with Johnny Depp reprising his Tusk role as bounty hunter Guy Lapointe alongside Lily-Rose Depp. Lily’s sharing the limelight will Harley Quinn Smith, the director’s daughter. The girls play yoga lovers working as convenience store clerks who must fight evil forces, lest the party they want to attend be ruined.
It looks bizarre, and not in a way that will win everyone over. “To shackle two lovely and promising teenage actresses to material this dreadful could be reasonably construed as an awfully expensive form of child abuse,” wrote Kevin Cheng at Variety. Brutal. On the other side of the argument, Bilge Elbiri at Vulture found it “a surprisingly fun, bizarre hybrid.” It’s impossible not to be intrigued by a film so divisive.
