After years of innovating with sportswear for Y-3, Yohji Yamamoto and adidas have now teamed up on an interstellar project: creating flight suits and boots for Virgin Galactic’s astronaut pilots and future passengers. The prototypes have just been revealed at Spaceport America in New Mexico. The “space-apparel system” they worked on required advanced fabrics, special techniques and bespoke specifications. Futuristic-sounding materials include Nomex Meta Aramid, TRAXION™, and adiPRENE®.
Lawrence Midwood of Y-3 said, “It has been a real honor to develop this product. At Y-3 we are fascinated by innovation and are continually looking to evolve, to progress and to challenge the ordinary, and this collaboration has enabled us to do so in a truly unique way. Space travel is one of the most exciting developments of our generation and working so closely with the team at Virgin Galactic has been thoroughly exciting, challenging and rewarding.”
Who better to dress the new generation of space pioneers than fashion’s prince of conceptual clothing, Yohji Yamamoto? Space is about to get seriously stylish.
