The latest Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, broke opening weekend box office records in North America, pulling in a whopping $238m (£159.7m). JJ Abrams’ first film in the directing driving seat of the famous franchise was already a critical success, but is now a proven commercial one too, topping the previous biggest opener, Jurassic World on $208.8m (£140m). The latest of the dinosaur theme park films remained the biggest global opener though with $525m (£352m), followed by the last Harry Potter movie, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming in third place with an international total of $517m (£347m) million. All the movies have a long way to go before they catch up with James Cameron’s Avatar though – it remains the biggest film of all time with an impressive haul of $2.79 billion.
