Being on the internet is like being at a party that never ends. Except instead of drinks and DJs and standing in the kitchen trying to pull someone, it’s an endless cacophonous barrage of news, of things you Need To Know Right Now, of new releases and celebrity gossip and cute cat videos. If only, you’re thinking right now, staring at your endless YouTube trailers, Twitter notifications and BuzzFeed quizzes where you choose a dinner and they tell you when you’re gonna get married, if only there was a place where you could get all the things you need in a handy round-up. If only there was a way to be excited about the good things and cut out the bad and still manage to sound knowledgeable without being glued to your phone all day.
Well lucky you! Happy hump day! Here is the i-D round-up of every newsworthy thing you should read about today! You are welcome!
Binge watching TV is bad for your health, says study
OK so, sorry to start off on a glum note, but a new study of nearly 9,000 adults in Australia found that for every additional hour you spend binge-watching a TV show, there’s a 12 per cent increase in the risk of an inflammatory related death. Brilliant. The study, which began all the way in 1999, measured viewing habits of 8,900 people over 12 years, during which time 909 died, 130 of them from inflammatory-related diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, or asthma. Lead author Dr Megan Grace also explained that people who spent more time watching TV tended to make less money and a lower diet quality.
And if you think that this carefully conducted study, with horrifying results, is going to finally make me — or anyone else — listen to the Netflix warning that I haven’t moved in hours while watching RuPaul’s Drag Race with the curtains closed then and improve my lifestyle then you are 100% wrong.
Drake just got a tattoo of Denzel Washington’s face
Drake has added to his impressive tattoo collection — which already includes homages to Lil Wayne, BBK, and Aliyah — with a portrait of Denzel Washington, because why not, right? The tattoo, by artist Inal Bersekov, depicts Denzel’s character Bleek from Spike Lee’s 1990 film Mo’ Better Blues. And it honestly looks pretty great.
Mariah and Missy killed it at VH1’s Hip Hop Honours show
Not every awards show gives the people what they want (Mariah Carey performing on a jet ski and Missy Elliot as a nightmarish dominatrix minion), but VH1 delivered. Paying tribute to their younger selves as only queens like Mariah and Missy know how, the 90s game-changers gave the audience their most loved songs.
Arising from a pool and holding court in a floor-length black trenchcoat, covered head to toe in black and jewels, Missy Elliot showed why she’s still one of the most influential women in hip-hop with her performance of 90s hit She’s a Bitch. Mariah, not to be outdone, performed a So So Def remix of her classic hit Honey, astride a golden jet-ski, accompanied by Jermaine Dupri and Da Brat. Oh, and she was introduced by DJ Khaled and son Asahd in matching periwinkle blue tracksuit. Obviously.
Olivia Munn had to pay for her Oceans 8 cameo
It’s a tough world out there. We’re all cutting back, even in Hollywood, apparently. Olivia Munn has revealed that in order to secure her cameo in the hotly anticipated Oceans 8 film (which also features cameos from Anna Wintour and Kim Kardashian), she had to pay for her own hair and make-up. She told Entertainment Weekly: “They’re like ‘do your own glam’ and I got the dress and all that and then you submit the bills for it because I’m a part of your movie. And then they’re [the producers] like ‘oh no, the bills come right back to you’.”
Harsh.
David Lynch reveals David Bowie wanted his voice dubbed in Twin Peaks
David Bowie’s posthumous cameo was an emotional moment for Twin Peaks fans, but it came with a few caveats — namely, that Bowie wanted his voice dubbed according to David Lynch. The director, who had discussed Bowie’s cameo with the star before he sadly passed away last year, told Pitchfork: “We got permission to use the old footage, but he didn’t want his voice used in it. I think someone must have made him feel bad about his Louisiana accent.”
Later in the emotional interview Lynch added: “He was unique, like Elvis was unique. There’s something about him that’s so different from everybody else… I just wish he was still around that I could work with him again.”
Justin Bieber and Marilyn Manson are in peace talks
It’s the cold war that’s been threatening to tear this world apart — well, after the whole USA North Korea thing — but it’s finally at a ceasefire, rejoice! In an interview with Howard Stern this week, Marilyn Manson revealed a series of texts with Justin Bieber as proof that they’ve finally buried the hatchet after T-shirt gate. Marilyn explained: “We are cool. People just made that shirt stuff into a fake feud.”
So… collab?
Liam Gallagher makes a really great cup of tea
And because it’s hump day and we all need a little mid-week pick-me-up, here is a great video of Liam Gallagher making a cuppa. As you were.
