From behind-the-scenes GoPro videos during fashion week to Hermès Apple watches, technology and fashion have an increasingly symbiotic relationship. And the spring/summer 16 shows were more techy than ever – Iris Van Herpen even 3-D printed a dress live on the runway. So, the newly announced 2016 Met Gala theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” seems especially fitting for next year’s “Oscars of fashion.”

The accompanying exhibition will focus on the relationship between machine-made fashion and haute couture. The curator of the Met’s Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton, explained that “recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.” According to Vogue, the show will include over 100 pieces of clothing, both haute couture and ready-to-wear, as well as 3-D printing workshops where visitors will be able to see designs crystallize. (Don’t worry Kanye, you can stop 3-D printers from ruining the fashion industry when you’re president.)

The gala will be sponsored by Apple and will take place on May 2, 2016. Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive, and Anna Wintour have already agreed to co-host the event. We can’t wait to see what outfits, and hopefully Segways, roll down the red carpet, but it will be hard to top Anna’s silver Princess Amidala-inspired look from 2008.
