After sporting some iconic red carpet looks over the past few years (we’re still thinking about that harness), it seemed inevitable that Timothée Chalamet would eventually make his way into the world of fashion. Well, it’s happened! Partnering with his go-to designer Haider Ackermann, the Wonka actor and potential Spiderman villain has created a hoodie with 100% of the proceeds going to the non-profit organisation Afghanistan Libre.
The Columbia-born Parisian designer has been behind a number of Timothée’s best fits: the satin silver suit and cowboy boots, the glittery two-piece Timmy stunned in at the Venice Film Festival, even the actor’s Converse-accessorised MET Gala look. The hoodie in question is a white cotton and fleece number, with a splatter of blue paint across the front depicting the eyes of a young child. Over the top are the words “Silent Soldier” and “HA + TC: A Common Thread”, the latter a nod to the united cause that brought the designer and actor together to work on the project.
“So for a couple of years now @h.a and I have been wanting to make something,” Timothée wrote in an Instagram post in which he’s seen modelling the new garment. “Together, in August, we were horrified to learn of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and decided to design a hoodie where 100% of the proceeds will go to @afghanistanlibre: a relief organisation with boots on the ground that fights to safeguard women’s and children’s rights – as those atrocities continue to spread, we should amplify the voices of those silent soldiers.”
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the United Nations and US has halted humanitarian aid to the country until the rights of women, to things such as education, are no longer at threat. However, this has also led to starvation and mass famine. As of Wednesday 22 December 2021, the US has eased it’s restrictions on aid. Meanwhile, Afghanistan Libre has been focusing on fighting the silencing of women and girls in the country that is stripping them of their freedoms. “By ordering a sweatshirt you are donating to this great cause and it’s vital work,” a message on the hoodie’s website reads. “With all our affection – Haider + Timothée.”
