vetements has been invited to show during paris couture week

The young French brand will be showing its next collection a lot sooner than we thought.

Three months ago, street-savvy French brand Vetements announced it would be shaking up the fashion calendar by combining its menswear and womenswear collections into one show in January — the same month that other more seasoned labels would be rolling out their most elaborate garments as part of Paris Haute Couture Week’s spring 17 season. But in a surprise plot twist, Vetements will actually be making an appearance a lot sooner than that. WWD reports that the brand has been invited to show during the couture calendar in Paris this July. The Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture has elected Vetements as official guests of the Fédération Française de la Couture.

Though Vetements isn’t the only brand showing in a guest slot — J. Mendel, Yuima Nakazato, Francesco Scognamiglio, and Iris Van Herpen have also been chosen by the Chambre Syndicale — it’s probably the most surprising. Vetements, which literally translates as “clothes,” is known primarily for lose-fitting hoodies and deconstructed denim that take cues from what people are wearing on the street. Though the brand also has plenty of technical prowess up its oversized sleeves. Chief designer Demna Gvasalia, a Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp alum and Margiela protégé, wasn’t appointed to the head of Balenciaga for nothing.

Haute Couture Week’s fall 16 season will take place from July 3 through July 7 in Paris.
