Virgil Abloh’s ascent from Kanye-West-collaborator to self-trained design-outsider to creative director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear line is unprecedented. His debut show for the French house two weeks ago stole the fashion headlines, a rainbow of inclusivity, diversity and hope. His next act? Putting his “literal brain on display” at SSENSE’s new Montreal store, not in one of those see-through Rimowa x Off-White suitcases, but via a scale reproduction of his studio in Chicago.
It is the centrepiece of a exhibition, called Cutting Room Floor, the studio features Virgil’s most personal creative knick-knacks on display, alongside his DJ equipment, notes, architectural models, and his Public Enemy Fear Of A Black Planet rug. “This project is literally about putting my brain on display, and showcases how chaotic and organised my creative process is. The viewer is a voyeur by design,” Virgil explained in the press release.
There will be of course be things to buy too, like signed Off-White x Nike Air Presto, Nike Air Force 1, and those Off-White x RIMOWA suitcases. Its open at SSENSE’s Montreal space until July 29.
