WAP will not be eligible to win a Grammy next year

There’s some serious injustice in this house, too.

Bad news, bardigang. Despite racking up the biggest ever streaming numbers for a debut single, “WAP” won’t be competing for a Grammy in next year’s prestigious awards ceremony.

Although submissions for the 2021 Grammys need to have been released between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020 — and “WAP”, released on 7 August 2020, made the eligibility window — the song will instead be submitted as part of Cardi’s upcoming album campaign, according to Pitchfork.

Little is known about her forthcoming second album (it hasn’t even been formally announced yet!) but back in August, Cardi told Elle that the follow-up to 2018’s Invasion of Privacy would be worthy of Queen Bey herself. “My music is always going to make a woman feel like a bad bitch. When you make a woman feel like she’s the baddest bitch in the room, to me, that’s female empowerment,” Cardi said. “But this album is going to be really different. Of course, it’s going to have my Lemonade moments, my personal relationship moments.”

So, we’ll have to wait another year for a Cardi/Megan win. C’est la vie. We’re sure it will be the first of many.
