The first trailer has been released for Hidden Figures, a film uncovering the forgotten history of three African American women who worked at NASA on the mission to send an astronaut to orbit Earth in 1962.

Empire‘s Taraji P. Henson stars as Katherine Johnson, the physicist, space scientist, and math genius who calculated “the launch and landing.” Musician Janelle Monáe plays aerospace engineer Mary Jackson, and Octavia Spencer plays mathematician and computer scientist Dorothy Vaughan.

After mapping Johnson’s childhood as a math prodigy, the trailer gets right to the point of the intersectional issues faced by the three women: a police officer is surprised that NASA hired them, and colleagues are confused about whether, as a woman, Johnson is allowed into meetings. She’s even mistaken for a cleaner.

The film features original music by Pharrell Williams, and also stars Kirsten Dunst and Kevin Costner. Hidden Figures will be released on January 13, 2017.
