The Gwen Stefani comeback is ramping up to full speed with the release of the second single and video from her first album in decade, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, expected March 18 on Interscope.
The first single from the album, “Used To Love You,” dropped last October with a stripped-back video of Stefani emoting her heartbreak in a close-up camera shot surrounded by darkness, but the cheerful second single sees the No Doubt frontwoman getting back to her pop storytelling glory days.
Filmed live during an ad break at the Grammy Awards last weekend, the video for “Make Me Like You” starts with Gwen waking with a start, like Alice in Wonderland in a strange room with rocks and clock projections, before hurtling through a beauty salon, a 50s speakeasy bar, a rollerblading rink, mirrored rooms and 60s-style psychedelic tunnels.
“Why’d you have to go and make me like you / Yeah, this is a feeling I’m not used to / I’m so mad at you, ’cause now you got me missing you,” she sings in the chorus, her Marilyn Monroe hair and red lips remaining a constant as her costumes change from a striped 50s summer dress to a patterned kimono, sparkly black suit, a rollerblading leotard and a red rose petal dress. It’s a feast for the eyes and Stefani back to her retro-camp best.
