Gay conversion therapy is the setting for a new film that’s been winning over the film festival circuit. Set in 1993 The Miseducation of Cameron Post stars Chloe Grace Moretz as the film’s namesake, who after being discovered making out with a girl at prom is sent to a treatment camp called God’s Promise. While there she makes friends with other camp attendees, one of them played by Sasha Lane, to form a group of misfits that clash with the evangelical christian teachings of the camp.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is based on a 2012 young adult novel of the same name that was written by Emily M Danforth. Earlier this year the film took out the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, the film festival’s highest honour.

Desiree Akhavan, the film’s director, told i-D about the challenge of writing the film at the moment evangelical Christian Mike Pence was confirmed as the US Vice President. “The only thing we can do right now is take action,” she told them. “And this film, that specifically brings focus to and demonises gay conversion therapy, is kind of the best thing we can do at this moment,” she said.
