Last week saw the release of McQueen, a new documentary shining a light on the personal and professional world of late designer Lee Alexander McQueen.
As written by i-D Junior Editor Ryan White in his review of the film, McQueen “contextualises the unparalleled glamour of Lee’s designs within the often difficult climate in which the clothes were created and presented… examining the titular designer’s ascent to glory, and descent into depression”.
“From his graduate collection at CSM, to his appointment at Givenchy in Paris, to his final show, McQueen patches together handheld camera footage, TV appearances and interviews with those who knew him, to paint a picture of Lee’s career beyond the catwalk.”
You can watch the trailer below.
So, with the film in cinemas, we’re using the first episode of series 2 of i-D’s weekly fashion podcast, Fash-ON Fash-OFF, to celebrate the radical genius of Lee Alexander McQueen. We’ll be speaking to the directors of the documentary, Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui. And we’ll be charting his rise from working-class boy from the East End to one of the most iconic artists of the century — before his shocking and premature death by suicide in 2010.
