A list of internet slang words spawned from Vine videos and Tumblr is being added to the dictionary on November 11, Mashable reports. The full list is yet to be revealed, but includes: “Yaaas,” spelled with three As, one S, FYI. “Fleek,” that precious but frequently misused and overused term coined by Atlanta-based Vine star Peaches Monroee in June 2014. (For a masterclass on appropriate use of “fleek,” watch Ariana Grande’s beautiful vocal tribute to Peaches.) And “sapiosexual,” apparently meaning “a person who finds intelligence to be a sexually attractive quality in others.” So far, so LOL.
But perhaps the most significant addition to Dictionary.com (admittedly, we’re not talking about Merriam-Webster here) is the title “Mx.” – the agender alternative to Miss, Mrs., or Mr. The non-binary prefix was already inducted into the slightly more legit Oxford English Dictionary in August. “Cisgender” was another recent addition. OED editor Jonathan Dent told the UK’s The Sunday Times, that these newly official words are examples of how the English language adapts to allow people to use “language in ways that suit them rather than letting language dictate identity to them.” Yaaas.
