If you were worried about the gross-out comedy becoming a relic of 00s and 2010s popcorn movies (we’re looking at you The Sweetest Thing and Bridesmaids), you’ll be glad to know that Pete Davidson’s new A24 movie Wizards! – yup, the exclamation point is part of the title – sounds like it will single-handedly carry the genre for decades to come.
According to World of Reel, the new movie from the cult studio had a test screening recently, and the reactions were – as you’d expect – passionate. “It’s trying to be something in the vein of The Beach Bum and Smiley Face,” the anonymous reviewer said, which sounds unhinged in itself. He also said that the film got trippy and, naturally, shitty – just not in the way you’d think. “There is a moment where [the film’s two protagonists] are forced to eat shit, literal shit, a 5 minute moment of [actor Franz] Rogowski eating a solid turd and Davidson eating liquid shit”. Magnificent.
What’s funnier is that David Michôd, the director of The King, has made the biggest tonal gearshift by following up that historical drama with this.
So what the hell is this film? What is Wizards! about? When can we actually watch it? Here’s everything we know about Wizards!.
What is the plot of Wizards!?
Wizards! Is the story of two beach bar operators – played by Pete and Passages actor Franz Rogowski – who spend most of their time stoned out of their minds. One day, they stumble across a bag of stolen cash, the sum of which is so big it could change their lives forever. But as soon as it’s in their hands, mayhem ensues.
Who will be starring in Wizards!?
As we’ve said, the Wizards! cast is led by Pete Davidson and hot German arthouse actor Franz Rogowski. Secondary characters, their roles not yet announced, include Sean Harris, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Scott and Rahel Romahn.
Is there a trailer for A24’s Wizards!?
Not yet! The closest things we have are behind-the-scenes paparazzi photos featuring Orlando Bloom with a haircut we don’t want to have to talk about.
When is the Wizards! release date?
David Michôn’s The King had a Venice Film Festival world premiere, which has some people questioning whether or not he’ll end up going down the same route for this in September. That being said, Wizards! doesn’t seem like a big awards player, so maybe A24 will hold out for a regular release in 2024 instead.
