In 2013, “selfie” was the word of the year. In 2014, it was “vape.” The battle for 2015’s top term might be a bit of a tight race, with “WTF” “emoji” and “meme” newly added to Merriam-Webster’s unabridged dictionary. The lols entries are among 1700 newly minted real words that reflect modern day life. Emoji might be the UK’s fastest growing language, but the internet generation is making sure its own slang and acronyms are widespread enough to become part of everyday use.
