Wu Tang Clan gigs are rare these days but last night Raekwon took a break from his tour with Slick Rick, to play a secret gig at Fitzroy’s vegan burger restaurant, Lord of the Fries. While the musician, hailed as one of the Top 50 MCs of our time, eating frites and sipping wine in the brightly-lit room was a sight to behold, this wasn’t the first time a Wu Tang member has performed at one of our eateries. A few years ago Ghostface Killer surprised fans when he jumped on the mic at Toastface Grillah, a Perth sandwich shop named in his honour.

Raekwon known, along with other members of Wu Tang, for his support of animal rights, opened the short set encouraging people to eat vegan before launching into his band’s seminal hit C.R.E.A.M, telling the crowd, “this is one of the best songs I ever made.” He followed it with Incarcerated Scarfaces, Triumph, three tracks from his latest album The Wild and 25 minutes of tipsy free styling over old school hip hop classics. The show finished with Raekwon and his DJ playing records while posing for photos and signing merch. You can see it it all unfold below. Perhaps RZA at Veggie Bar is next?
