There’s a documentary on the way about renowned artist and dot expert Yayoi Kusama, and we just got a trailer. Kusama — Infinity will delve into her lengthy career, exploring a range of topics including her process, the ongoing influence of her work and the challenges she faced as a Japanese woman in a white male-dominated industry.
The film will be released by Mongolia Pictures, who describe how “Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her — the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions, sexism and racism in the art establishment, mental illness in a culture where that was a particular shame, and eventually growing old and continuing to pursue and be devoted to her art full time.”
Now she’s one of the biggest selling artists in the world, one of the most popular, and undoubtedly one of the most distinctive — chances are you’ve seen your fair share Infinity Room selfies pop up your insta feed — but her work’s more than just Instagram fodder. It traverses surrealism, pop art and minimalism, challenges perceptions of space, and explores our infinite universe. All with a simple dot.
