Zayn Malik has become bigger than ever since splitting from One Direction in March 2015. Since then he has dropped his own album, been co-signed by Tyler, the Creator, and flown not-so-solo to the Met Gala on the arm of his supermodel girlfriend Gigi Hadid. But Malik’s most important contribution to pop culture will involve him revisiting those tumultuous years he spent complying with a strict facial hair embargo and pissing off the rest of his 1D bandmates by reluctantly being dubbed the Hottest Male Singer of 2014. Malik’s next gig is as Executive Producer on a new series from the makers of HBO’s Entourage, about a fictional 1D-style boy band and the trials and tribulations of fame.
A source told The Sun that Malik will be advising the writers on everything from casting to plot lines. The hope is that the group will become a global phenomenon and launch a career off the back of the show, topping charts both on-screen and IRL. This somewhat convoluted scheme does actually have precedent in the successful MTV television movie and spin-off series 2gether, which spawned a fake boy band by the same name — one which became so popular that its members even opened (in character) for Britney Spears on her 2000 summer tour.
