It’s been just six years since Amy Winehouse tragically died of alcohol poisoning at 27, and her family are now in talks to keep her memory alive by planning a West End musical about her short life.

Dad Mitch Winehouse said the musical would focus on the other parts of Amy’s life, and not rehash her well publicised battles with drugs and alcohol. Speaking to The Sun at a gala for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity set up in his daughter’s name, Mitch said: “A musical celebrating her life and music is being talked about for the near future. It is something I’d really like to happen and I’ve said I’m happy for it to go ahead.”

Amy’s life had previously been chronicled in the critically acclaimed documentary Amy, which showed her journey from a happy teenager to finding fame as a jazz singer, and descending into addiction. Amy’s dad famously hated the documentary, which showed a complicated relationship with his famous daughter, calling it “a disgrace”.

Worlds away from the difficult to watch documentary, Mitch promises that the proposed West End musical would be a more positive look at Amy’s life, and feature many of her hits. He said: “We want to do something that remembers Amy for what she was, there’s so much more to her than just the drugs and the alcohol.

“We want to do something positive about how she developed her music.”
