Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has already found favor among a number of rappers including Lil B and Killer Mike, the Run the Jewels MC who recently interviewed Sanders over fried chicken and yams before introducing the senator at an Atlanta rally. But now, a host of genre-spanning musicians are coming together to support Sanders on his home turf, Brooklyn.
Cass McCombs, Frankie Cosmos, Gang Gang Dance duo Lizzi Bougatsos and Brian DeGraw, Wet, and countless others will perform at “Brooklyn is Berning,” a two-night concert benefit to be held at Williamsburg’s Baby’s All Right on January 5 and 6. Pitchfork reports that in addition to music and comedy, the event will feature talks by local authors and academics, as well as special guests. Neil Young, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Zoe Kravitz and Lily-Rose Depp have voiced their support for Sanders’ campaign, so surprise appearances are anyone’s guess.
It’s unclear whether Bernie himself will make an appearance, but he is presently close by, delivering a speech at New England College in New Hampshire. Fingers crossed he’ll take the stage to reprise singles from his own 1987 folk album (or maybe just spit a few bars from BasedWorld).
