Christopher Bailey told the New York Times this morning that he’d been looking at a photograph of David Bowie just last week – taken in the 60s, it showed Bowie in a Burberry trench coat.
At his fall/winter 2016 men’s show in London today, Bailey recognized the lasting impact the late icon has had on the fashion world, and on his own sensibilities. He sent several models down the runway with glitter-daubed faces, in a spontaneous celebration of the Bowie’s glam rock legacy. And the soundtrack, too, made Bailey’s message loud and clear, including both “Changes” and “Oh! You Pretty Things.”
But Bailey wasn’t the only Bowie fan that wanted to pay their respects. Model Hayett McCarthy (see her in Burberry’s new spring/summer 16 campaign) – allegedly of her own accord – opened her hands part-way through her catwalk procession to reveal the word “BOWIE” written across her palms. It was a fittingly renegade tribute to a man who never played by the fashion rules.
