A documentary about the life and legacy of the late actor Chadwick Boseman will arrive on Netflix this Saturday 17 April, promising to give us an insight into his creative process through the lens of those he collaborated with throughout his career.

The movie, titled Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist, wasn’t teased by Netflix before production, only being announced alongside a trailer just days before its due to launch. It comes in the wake of Chadwick’s Best Actor awards sweep for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, for which he’s won the Golden Globe award, Screen Actors Guild award, the Gotham award and the Critics Choice award. The Oscars, where he’s expected to win that same prize, take place on 26 April.

The full list of talent appearing in the documentary crosses many of his movies and projects to date. From Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, co-stars Viola Davis, Taylour Paige and Glynn Turman to the directors of his earlier features like 42, Marshall and Get On Up. Rounding off the illustrious list are Woodie King Jr., director of the New Federal Theater, and Phylicia Rashad, an actor, director, producer and professor at Howard University.

According to Netflix, Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist “is an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor’s incomparable artistry, and the acting process which informed his transformative performances”. Watch the trailer below, and tune in to Netflix on Saturday to get your first look. But be quick — the documentary will leave the streaming service after 30 days.
